Back For More: Hampton Roads Whalers’ Brandon Tough
The United States Premier Hockey League’s Back For More series highlights returning players who are continuing their development and building on the progress they made during the previous season. Whether they’re stepping into bigger roles, chasing new opportunities or taking another step toward college hockey, these players are back for more in 2026-27.

One of those players is Hampton Roads Whalers defenseman Brandon Tough, who returns for his second season with the organization after an impressive rookie campaign. The Calgary, Alberta native recorded 8 goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 36 USPHL Elite games during the 2025-26 season while also getting his first taste of the USPHL Premier with two appearances.
Now set to make the jump to the Premier full-time, Tough is expected to take on a significant role on the Whalers’ blue line. Head Coach Chris Hille believes the young defenseman is ready to contribute as a top-four defenseman while quarterbacking the team’s power play.
“Brandon’s high-flying skill wows me daily on the ice, but his manners and off-ice habits set him apart from most kids his age,” said Hille. “His maturity to process information thoroughly while navigating difficult situations has equipped him to get to this point in his career. Excited to see what this year brings.”
Hille says Tough’s development is exactly what the USPHL pathway is designed to produce. After a successful rookie season in the USPHL Elite and gaining valuable experience in a pair of Premier games, Tough earned the opportunity to move up full-time for the 2026-27 season.
With a year of junior hockey experience behind him, Tough enters the new season ready for the next step in his development as he looks to establish himself at the Premier level.
