The United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) has announced that the Atlanta MadHatters USPHL Premier franchise has relocated to Buffalo, NY and will compete as the Buffalo Steel beginning with the 2026-27 season.

Located in one of North America’s premier hockey markets, the Buffalo Steel will bring a player-first approach built around development, professionalism, and accountability.

“Buffalo [New York] has, by far, one of the strongest hockey communities in North America,” said Buffalo Steel President of Hockey Operations Joe Tarpy. “The city has a deep-rooted passion for the game, a large player pool, dedicated fans, and a rich history of developing high-level players. We want our identity to reflect the hard-working, blue-collar mentality that Buffalo is known for.”

Player advancement will be a central focus of the organization. Tarpy believes the USPHL’s proven development model provides players with a clear pathway to higher levels of junior and collegiate hockey.

“The USPHL Premier level allows players to gain valuable junior hockey experience while preparing for opportunities at higher levels,” Tarpy said. “Our goal is to create an environment where players can develop their skills, hockey IQ, strength, and maturity.”

The Buffalo Steel will also place a major emphasis on helping players continue their careers at the collegiate level. Through the USPHL’s showcase events and extensive scouting network, players will receive exposure and support throughout the recruiting process.

“Our mission is to help every player maximize their opportunities to advance to NCAA, ACHA, or other collegiate hockey programs while continuing their academic and athletic development,” Tarpy said.

On and off the ice, the Buffalo Steel are committed to creating an environment centered on development, accountability, and character. Players can expect a structured program focused on skill development, team play, strength and conditioning, video analysis, mentorship, and life skills training.

“We want players to leave the Buffalo Steel not only as better hockey players, but also as better people, equipped with the tools necessary for success in hockey, academics, and life,” Tarpy added.

The Buffalo Steel bring USPHL Premier hockey to one of North America’s most passionate hockey communities while reinforcing the league’s commitment to player development and advancement.
