Unfinished Business: Mercer Chiefs’ Benjamin Smith

The National Collegiate Development Conference’s Unfinished Business series highlights returning veterans who are back to lead, continue their development and pursue goals still within reach. Whether it’s a Dineen Cup championship, a college commitment or another opportunity to prove themselves, these players return to the NCDC with unfinished business.

One of those players is Mercer Chiefs forward Benjamin Smith, who returns for his second season with the organization after establishing himself as one of the USPHL’s top offensive players. During the 2025-26 season, Smith led the Mercer Chiefs’ Premier squad with 37 goals and 51 assists for 88 points in 41 games, while also appearing in nine NCDC games and gaining valuable experience at the next level.

Now entering his second season with the organization, Smith is expected to make a full-time impact in the NCDC. Head Coach Rob Broderick believes Smith will be one of the Chiefs’ top forwards while serving as one of the team’s leaders during the 2026-27 season.

“Guys like Ben Smith are guys that every team needs,” said Broderick. “He is such a good person, from a great family. He is very talented, but he also never takes shortcuts out there. He is going to be a really good college hockey player in the near future, and I cannot wait to watch his play and his leadership this year.”

Broderick said Smith’s success is a product of both his talent and relentless work ethic. After excelling at the Premier level and continuing to develop through NCDC opportunities, Smith has earned the chance to take on a larger role while helping lead Mercer this season.

With another year of experience in the organization, Smith enters the 2026-27 campaign ready to build on an outstanding season and establish himself as one of the NCDC’s top forwards.
