Years of hard work certainly paid off for the Charlotte Rush’s Spencer Barrow. He was with the Rush from 2022 through 2025, and worked his way from the USPHL Elite to the USPHL Premier, and now he has earned his spot with the NCAA’s Elmira College.

“I started talking with Coach Saul and Elmira College during the off-season. They liked my physical play style and scoring ability,” said Barrow, a 2004-born native of Massapequa, N.Y.

“Elmira is a great fit for me. The deep history and consistent winning seasons really caught my eye, as well as how they move players on to the professional ranks,” said Barrow. “Also, with such a beautiful campus and smaller class sizes, I feel I will be able to get all the help I need to succeed off the ice and in the future.”

Barrow first joined the Rush’s Elite team in 2022-23, and earned his first of two USPHL Elite Southeast All-Division honors. Between 2022-24, Barrow registered 99 points in 67 games, placing him third on the Elite Rush’s all-time scoring leaderboard (going back to the Elite’s first season of 2017-18).

He saw his first 13 Premier games in 2023-24, earning four assists, and then went out and racked up 26 points in 39 games this past regular season.

“Charlotte gave me a great home for 3 years. Everything about that program is top notch. From the coaches to ownership, from the facilities to the people, Charlotte is a great place to develop into a great player and better person,” added Barrow. “It gave me habits I will carry with me forever and friendships I will keep forever.”

He was also grateful to be able to move up within the ranks and within the USPHL’s unparalleled three-tiered junior development system.

“I believe the USPHL is a great place to develop and be watched. Whether is at their many different showcases or nationals, college coaches are in attendance and you are being seen by a lot of great schools,” Barrow said. “The USPHL definitely developed me into a better player throughout the years. The competition and skill level of the players really prepares you to make the next step. Especially in the strong Southeast Division, I feel every game was a close and fast-paced game where every game you are really improving your game and skill set.”

As he has succeeded at every hockey level so far, it would come as no surprise to see him be a key player for Elmira. That said, he knows it will still take a lot of work to create that success story in the NCAA.

“This off-season, I’m working on improving my footwork and speed, to make a quicker first step, and gain speed I will need in order to compete at the Division III level,” he said. “I’m putting a lot of time and work in the weight room and outside to ensure I make a difference from Day 1. Getting a quicker first step and adding speed will help me to get to pucks quicker and hopefully win more battles along the walls.”

The USPHL congratulates Spencer Barrow, his family, the Charlotte Rush and Elmira College for his commitment.
